Variants
A variant is a sibling asset generated from the same prompt or reference with a different result. Variants exist so you can explore alternatives without touching the asset you already have. Each variant is a full asset: its own build, its own conversation, its own export.
When to use variants
Section titled “When to use variants”- Text to Sim, several plausible objects. “A wooden stool” has many valid answers; generate 3 and pick.
- Try a different reference without losing the current build.
- Compare settings: Different available shape settings, Parts vs Articulated, or two collision levels.
- Populate a scene with non-identical instances of the same object type.
Use editing instead when you want to change this asset in place.
How they relate
Section titled “How they relate”- The asset you started from is the parent. Variants are children with a link back to the parent.
- Variants don’t share builds. Editing the parent doesn’t change a variant, and vice versa.
- Variants keep their own conversation. The parent’s conversation records that variants were created.
- Deleting the parent does not delete variants; they become standalone assets.
- A variant can be promoted to be the parent’s representative: the one the Organization Library and listings show by default.
Creating
Section titled “Creating”- At generation (text only): set Variants to 2 to 4 on the input stage. Each gets its own generated reference.
- From a finished asset: Create menu > Variant. Choose what changes (new reference, different prompt wording, different settings). Each destination is priced on its own button.
Every variant is quoted separately on the confirmation card. Four variants cost roughly four generations; they don’t share shape generation.
Comparing
Section titled “Comparing”Open the parent; the Variants tab lists children with thumbnails, status, and the settings that differ. Open two in separate tabs to compare in the viewer. There’s no side-by-side viewer yet.
Promoting and deleting
Section titled “Promoting and deleting”- Promote a variant to representative from its menu. The parent’s default thumbnail and library listing switch to it. Nothing is deleted.
- Delete a variant from its menu. Its exports are gone; the parent is untouched.
Not a variant
Section titled “Not a variant”- Retry reruns a failed stage on the same asset.
- Regenerate replaces this asset’s build.
- Reprocess reruns downstream stages on this asset.
- Duplicate (Library) copies a finished asset as-is without regenerating.
FAQ: retry vs reprocess vs variant.
POST /assets/{id}/variants with the changed parameters. Variant creation is refused with a clear error when the feature isn’t enabled for the organization. Using the API.
